“Steppe”: Consistent Productivity Under Water-Limited Conditions

Atameken-Agro Korneevka LLP offers seeds of “Steppe,” a high-yielding spring bread wheat variety adapted to the conditions of Northern Kazakhstan and periodic moisture shortages.

The “Steppe” variety was developed by Agrokompleks Kurgansemena LLC through individual selection from a hybrid population of the Altayskaya 50 and Altayskaya 60 varieties.
The variety has been included in the State Register of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the North Kazakhstan Region since 2021 and for the Akmola Region since 2022.

“Steppe” is a medium-early maturing variety with a growing period of 76–80 days. Its relatively short growing period gives farms greater flexibility in sowing dates and helps them organize field operations more efficiently.

One of the variety’s key advantages is its ability to deliver consistent yields under periodic moisture shortages. It makes efficient use of rainfall during the growing season and is suitable for cultivation under both moderate and relatively low-input farming conditions.

The variety is classified as strong wheat. Its kernels are large, red, and semi-elongated. “Steppe” is a semi-intensive variety that combines high yield potential with good adaptability to steppe growing conditions.

The recommended seeding rate depends on the growing region, sowing technology, and type of furrow openers. Under conventional sowing systems, it may range from approximately 3.5 to 5.5 million viable seeds per hectare.

When using hoe or disc openers with wider row spacing and a high standard of crop management, the seeding rate can be reduced. However, field weed pressure, moisture availability, the preceding crop, and the crop protection system in use must be taken into account.

The combination of medium-early maturity, adaptability to moisture shortages, high yield potential, and grain quality makes “Steppe” a promising choice for agricultural producers in the North Kazakhstan and Akmola regions.
